Beyond the Service: Serving by Leading, Legacy in the Making

Beyond the Service Awards Central Philippines on Success Sphere

Leadership can take surprising forms, and for Mr. Sonny, it was a path he hadn’t planned to take. For the third installment of ACP’s Success Sphere, Mr. Florizel “Sonny” I. Flores, the New President of Rotary Club— Makati South shared his insights on leadership, community and his definition of success hoping to encourage others to lead with heart and purpose.

President of Rotary Club Makati South Induction Ceremony

He was hesitant initially but appointed by his club, he took on the role—and ultimately, he thrived in it, comparing the Rotary Club experience to a lively classroom where every member contributes to the “lesson”.

The role, he found, was more than ceremonial. It was a blend of responsibilities that extended into the heart of the community, aiming to serve others and rally support for meaningful causes. It was one of growth and unexpected fulfillment that he found himself doing more and more for the community.

When asked about his philosophy on leadership, Mr. Sonny shares a thoughtful insight:

“If you become president, you become the first among equals. Don’t ever think you’re above everyone else.”

This approach is about humility, where leadership means trust and service rather than authority. He also warmly embraces the idea of following the footsteps of past presidents, learning from their accomplishments and wisdom while contributing his own unique perspective.

His most important advice?

“To listen, listen to your subordinates, followers, community. That’s the most important thing to know when you become a leader. Listening allows you to understand exactly what they need, what they want to accomplish.”

This listening-centered approach not only makes Mr. Sonny a relatable leader but also a successful one. His path is a reminder that success in leadership isn’t about seeking power but answering the call to serve, staying connected, and trusting others. Winning, in his words, is simply fulfilling the role you’re entrusted with and respecting those who rely on you.

Honor the champions of change—because every leader, like Mr. Sonny deserves to be celebrated.
